Tourism signs, as one part of public signs, refer to the words and drawings which offer noticing, informing, directing and warning information to the public in the scenic spots. They are important approaches for the management institutes of the scenic spots to communicate with the tourists. Chizhou, a city with a long history, has a lot of scenic spots of distinctive local features owing to its beautiful natural scenery, artificial projects, Buddhism culture and poetry culture. Tourism is becoming a booming and backbone industry in Chizhou. So C-E translation of tourism signs is very important for the tourism industry to be internationalized and plays a key role in developing the local economy of Chizhou.Functionalist translation theory formed its own independent theoretical system in the1970s,including Katharina Reiss’" Text Typology", Hans J. Vermeer’s"Skopos Theory"and Christiane Nord’s "Loyalty Principle". Skopos theory noted by Vermeer is the soul of the functionalist translation theory. He stats that any translation activity has its own purpose, on which a translation establish its own translation method. The target audiences play an important role in determining the purpose of the translation. With the guidance of Skopos theory, this thesis focuses on the tourism signs in Chichou.By analyzing the linguistic errors, pragmatic errors and cultural errors in the C-E translations of the tourism signs on the basis of the features of geography and culture, this paper puts forward the suitable translation strategies, such as, of the language by domestication, alienation and aesthetics translation.and translation methods, such as literal translation, liberal translation (addition, omission and adaption), and transliteration.
