Colleen McCullough (1937-) is an Australian contemporary female writer, and also an outstanding feminist. Due to the rich experience which gives her unique creative inspiration, her creative field is wild and she gets great achievements. From her famous work The Thorn Birds, the readers may come to know her fresh and beautiful writing style as well as her close and delicate structure. Her vivid depiction of women’s inner feeling is also to be respected. She is really a good writer who can combine strength with tenderness. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a famous British female novelist whose works mainly focused on the marriage and life of women living in the gentry household. With her delicate insight and lively words, she described the little world around her, especially the marriage life between ladies and gentlemen. There were not any major social contradictions in her works. She was considered as the pioneer of feminist author.Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’s earliest work, published in1813. The Independence of Miss Mary Benne,t written in2008, is the sequel of Pride and Prejudice. This thesis will focus on the differences on demonstration of feminism in these two novels. It is divided into three parts, the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. Among them, the main part is made up of three chapters.At first, the introductory part gives a brief introduction to the two authors and their works, the literature review of the works and the theory of feminism.Focusing on the analysis of the main characters and the marriages in the two novels, the main body of this thesis includes three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the female consciousness shown in the two novels and the specific differences; the second chapter comes up with a term" patriarchy" and studies the different challenges and final subversion of patriarchy; the third chapter discusses the two authors’ different views on marriage and their differences. Through such comparison, the readers may have a clearer view on the development of feminism.Finally, the conclusion gives a summary of the above contents. This thesis points out that both of the two authors would like to arouse readers’ female consciousness and only by constant fighting can women obtain equal rights with men.
