The Toury’s Norm Perspective Of Normalization

Based on the current translation studies, Toury’s norm theory has been enormouslyapplied in literature translations by the method of the DTS. Those researches were aimed atfinding out socio-cultural constraints in both source language and target language, whichwould affect translator’s behaviors. Therefore, this thesis tries to figure out norms in theEnglish-Chinese finance news, a kind of non-literary text type. However, the normscannot be traced merely from linguistic formulations. So, the thesis applies normalization,a term from translation universals, studying specific translator’s behavior. And throughempirical research, norms can be finally found in English–Chinese news translation.Moreover, the thesis also uses some computer-aided tools and corpus analytical software todeliver more objective research outcomes. In this empirical study, the normalizationhypotheses couldn’t be found in all round way, which would be explained from normtheory.Framework of study:Introduction gives a rough map for the whole research.Chapter1is the literature review, which gives both research development of normstheory and the evolution of researches for translation universals.Chapter2is the theoretical framework, which gives an in-depth research on norm andnormalization.Chapter3is the empirical study, which analyzes financial news at both lexical andgrammatical level.Chpater4gives the conclusion for this thesis.
