Under the economic globalization, China is facing up with an unprecedented development nowadays. In the fierce competition of employment in China, people with overseas education background sometimes get more favor in the employment market in China. Recent years, Chinese family living standard is greatly improved. More and more young Chinese want to go abroad to expand their horizons and improve themselves through study in such era of knowledge economy. More and more Chinese parents spend much money on their children’s overseas educational investment with whatever-it-takes sort of attitude. However in such a fierce domestic job competition, such investments may not bring satisfying results. Thus it is necessary to make an analysis of self-supporting study in China nowadays to evaluate such educational investment. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the relationship between cost of self-supporting studying aboard in our country and actual benefit of it so as to give people who plan to make such educational investment good advices based on the principle of maximum benefit.Economics of language is the study of determinants and consequences of language proficiency within the framework of the methodology and tools of economics which was first introduced by Jacob Marchak in1965. And it is established on the foundation of economics of education and defines language as a kind of human capital. Most of the experts of economics of language focused on English teaching, education system or economy principle in language using or translations. As far as self-supporting studying aboard is concerned, all the researchers in China and aboard almost all start from pure economics. Studying abroad could also being regarded as a kind of investment in language and human capital. However none of them until now viewing this issue from the economics of language.With theory of economics of language and some other economic approaches, the thesis tries to do a cost-benefit analysis of self-supporting study abroad in our country to evaluate current situation of such overseas educational investment according to an investigation. In the cost part, public and private costs are illustrated in details. And direct and indirect benefits will be revealed in benefit analysis. According to the analysis above, an optimal portfolio is given in theoretical level. And at last, suggestions to government, society and private persons are proposed for people in order to achieve the maximum benefit of such overseas educational investment.Research approaches such as cost-benefit analysis, public goods theory, and portfolio theory are introduced in the research. A questionnaire is designed to investigate the current situation of self-supporting study abroad in China so as to improve objectivity and accuracy.Through the design of questionnaire, the thesis finds out current failures of studying abroad in China. From the perspectives of pure public goods, pure private goods, mixed goods and club goods, it is concluded that achieving the best investment needs joint efforts of four parts. At last, suggestions are put forward in government supervision, social guidance and private efforts as a conclusion. This thesis tends to make a quantitative-analysis and finally proposes an optimal portfolio of self-supporting study abroad within the framework of economics of language. The significance lies in giving suggestions of making maximum benefits for individuals so as to avoid unsatisfactory educational investment and guiding our society and government to avoid brain drain.
