Jin Yong’s Novels And Wei-Jin Demeanor

The Wei-Jin demeanor, aesthetic category showed out in late Han Dynasties, when people were in pursuit of independence of personality and freedom of spirit. Inwardly, it is the independent personality, free spirit, attention payed to the emotion; outwardly, it is desolateness, heroism, scintillating and latitudinarianism but is also absurdly coxcombry, elegant, accessible. The Wei-Jin demeanor is influential for the later scholars.Study of Jin Yong’s characters has found that both the chivalrous or the swaggers, are imprinted with the heavy Wei-Jin demeanor:from Yuan-Chengzhi to Wei-Xiaobao they all have more or less the demeanor mentioned above. From this point of view, the chivalrous depicted by Jin Yong is the good demonstration of Wei-Jin style.This paper is on the demeanor of Jin Yong with three sections. Based on the overview the inward and outward meaning of Wei-Jin demeanor, the first part of analyzes the demeanor example of Xiao-Feng, Linghu Chong, Yang-Guo and Zhang Wuji, mainly on their independence of personality, freedom of spirit, desolateness, heroism, scintillating and latitudinarianism. It is concluded by their similarities, namely, although they were in troubled, they still persisted in freedom of thought, independent personality and finally they all chose to retreat.The second part explores the ways used by Jin Yong when he expresses the chivalrous’Wei-Jin demeanor, that is, the use of image--using the scholars’poetry to create characters; use comments on the chivalrous to express Wei-Jin demeanor. The allusion in his novels are mainly from the Wei-Jin Dynasty’s poems and songs, writer’s work, which is natural and also appropriate.The third part explains the reason that Jin Yong’s novels demonstrate the demeanor of Wei-Jin Dynasty and its significance. First of all, this paper analyzes the composition reasons of new martial arts novels from the special social background and writer’s natural temperament and summarizes the significance of Jin Yong works from two aspects:first, it strengthens the influence of Chinese traditional culture; second, Jin Yong novels suit both refined and popular tastes.Kong-Weidong accurately describes Jin Yong’s life:"Young as a paladin, middle-aged as an entertainer, elderly as an immortal ", which summarizes the life of Jin Yong and proves briefly the relation of Jin Yong and Wei-Jin demeanor.
