Yan Geling is one of the most outstanding female writers in the overseas Chinese literarycircle. It has been almost30since she started to write novels in the late80’s of the20thcentury. She has been writing continuously, brought out new works constantly andmaintaining exuberant creation trend. Byreading Yan Geling’s works, we can find that she isa writer with strong tragic consciousness. There are presentation of various human tragedy inher works, that is, more than50short stories and novellas and10long novels. The discussionon the dilemma of human existence and the presentation of various bitterness on humansurvival and spiritual dimensions constitute an important theme of Yan Geling’s novels. Inorder to sorting out and grasping the tragic consciousness of her novels, from the perspectiveof tragic consciousness, using of specific methods of text analysis and case intensive studymethod, this paper explores Yan Geling ’s novel deeply: investigating the origin of the tragedyconsciousness and analyzing the connotation of the tragic consciousness,the distinguishedcharacteristics of the tragic characters as well as her unique tragic narrative style.This article is divided into three parts of the introduction, body and conclusion. TheIntroduction section describes the object of the study and the methods of the paper, definesthe conception of tragedy and tragic consciousness, and gives an overview about the researchstatus on the writer and her works. The main body of this paper can be divided into fourchapters:Chapter Ⅰ: Explore of the origin of tragic consciousness. This chapter explores the sourceof the tragedy consciousness of her novels from her life experiences and her understanding oflife. The root causing her tragedy consciousness is mainly explored from two aspects: her lifeexperience and the influence of Chinese and western culture to the establishment of hertragedy consciousness. The conclusion is worked out, her complex life experiences and herunderstanding of life doomed the tragic features of her works.Chapter Ⅱ: Connotation of the tragedy consciousness. This chapter sums up theconnotation of the tragic consciousness in Yan Geling’s novels in four aspects: first, the fallof the beautiful life--tragedy of life; secondly, the difficult life of the immigrations in exotic environment–tragedy of existence; thirdly, the lives destroyed by the so-called"revolution ideal" in Cultural Revolution–tragic of faith; fourth, beautiful but “destined toseparate" love–tragedy of love.Chapter Ⅲ: the tragic image of the character. Yan Geling creates a group of soft buttough image of women. With their great and deep strength personality, they achievedforgiveness and redemption for those suffe, they performed the tragic spirit of unremittingstruggle and redemption. This chapter, base on the feelings of the earth mother, the true natureand the strength of life, analyzes the characteristics of the tragic figures in Yan Geling’snovels.Chapter Ⅳ: the aesthetic features of the tragedy narrative. With her own unique form ofartistic expression, Yan Geling integrates tragedy mood into her works, and formed her ownunique style of tragedy and a distinctive artistic personality. This chapter explains YanGeling’s narrative aesthetic features from her calm and warm tragedy statement, herhumorous languages, her unique aesthetic.Yan Geling has created many tragic stories and characters with her unique expressionand presented the tragic nature of life in front of us and showed her sympathy to the tragicfate of human beings. As a result, we have a clearer understanding of Yan Geling’s tragedyconsciousness in her novels-the tragedy of life is inevitable, but we can face it withoptimistic, open and inclusive mind.
