John Leighton Stuart was a person who had important influence on the modern Chinese history and Sino-US relations, and he has always been a controversial figure. In China he had three kinds of identities:missionary, educator and the American ambassador in China. The paper discusses the Leighton Stuart’s ambassadorial career in China, in order to form a systematic and comprehensive understanding and make the corresponding evaluation on Leighton Stuart.The paper can be divided into three major parts:the foreword, the text, and the conclusion. The foreword briefly introduces the brief reasons and the significance for the choice of this topic, the present situation of the academic research in and abroad, the research objectives and methods, as well as the innovation of this paper. The text is made up of three chapters. In Part One, the paper expatiates the background and courses of Leighton Stuart serving as the United States ambassador in China, describes the inevitability of it from the subjective and objective conditions of Leighton Stuart. In Part Two, the paper discusses Leighton Stuart’s political views during ambassadorial career, the efforts to achieve them and the inevitable failure of the efforts. In Part Three, the paper summarizes Leighton Stuart’s desolate old age, and mainly explores the causes of Leighton Stuart’s failure from the limitations of U.S. policy toward China and the limitations of himself. The conclusion further improves the understanding of the Leighton Stuart’s ambassadorial career in China.
