“The Analects of Confucius” is one of the most important Confucian literature,and in each dynasty, innumerable scholars annotated for it. Among them,"explanatory note of Analects of Confucius "（《论语正义》）by Liu Baonan(刘宝楠）is the most famous work which can be called the models of the notes for the Analects.As the most representative noter, he payed more attention to detailed and full textualcriticism, includes the ancient institutions, naming and system, customs and etiquettes,historical events and the name of person and places, which reflects Qian-Jia’s learningstyle of textual criticism and the characteristics of annotation in Qing Dynasty.This paper focus on the " explanatory note of Analects of Confucius "’s functionsof institution in the exegesis. And before discuss the functions, the author determinethe content and divied the content into five categories, including institution related tolife, institution of etiquette and music, institution of military and punishment,institution of astronomy,as well as institution of geography. the institution related tolife has three parts: naming and system, fields scope and quality, taxes. Theinstitution of etiquette and music also divided into six parts, which includes theetiquette of sacrifice, burial, shooting, dressing, visiting, dancing with music. Theinstitution of astronomy has astronomy and calender, besides, institution ofgeography has surveying of place name and geography.From above, the authorsummarize the functions of institution exegetics are to clear the meaning, reveallinguistic structure and provide relevant context.
