A Research On The University Students’ Time Perspective, Academic Delay-gratification And Academic Procrastination Relation

Procrastination is very common in college students’ daily life, it refer to thetendency that students postpone executing learning tasks required without any goodreason. Academic procrastination not only lead to poor performance, but also might tobring negative emotional reaction like tension, anxiety, guilt and regret, as wellimpacting on individual’s physical and mental healthy. At the same time, Blatte,Bembenutty and Klassen’s studies had showed that time perspective and academicdelay of gratification could predict strongly academic procrastination. So, in this study,time perspective, academic delay and academic procrastination questionnaire wereused as measurement tool, college students coming from Henan university of Scienceand Technology, Luoyang Normal university and Luoyang Institute of Science andTechnology were chosen as research objectives by cluster sampling,568subjectswere effective, to explore the character of three variables based back group variable,And relationship between time perspective, academic delay and academicprocrastination, it will provide a theoretical basis of education intervention toeducators. The main results were found:(1) Procrastination was especially prevalent in university students,64%ofundergraduates were involved in the academic procrastination,28%of them werehigher degree procrastinators, and36%of them were medium degree procrastinators.Male students were significant higher than female students in postponing beginning,done awfully, insufficient planning and totaling academic procrastination; there wassignificant difference between grades in insufficient planning, Results showed thatsophomores and juniors were markedly higher than freshers; Authoritative parentingstyle was significant higher than democratic parenting style.(2) In future temporal dimension, female students were stronger than malestudents. In present-fatalistic dimension, male students were higher than femalestudents; science was stonger than the liberal arts; compared with sophomores, juniorsand seniors, freshers’ present-fatalistic were the weakest. In present-hedonisticdimension, science was also stronger than the liberal arts. Compared with sophomoresand seniors, freshers’ past-positive time perspective was the strongest.(3) Female students’ academic delay of gratification was remarkable higher thanmale students. (4) Present-fatalistic, present-hedonistic time perspective was stronger, academicprocrastination tendency was higher, the lower academic delay of gratification.Past-negative time perspective was stronger, academic procrastination tendency washigher, the lower academic delay of gratification. Past-positive, future temporal timeperspective was stronger, academic procrastination tendency was lower, the higheracademic delay of gratification. Academic delay of gratification was more strong,academic procrastination tendency was lower. Time perspective and academic delayof gratification were significiant variables impacting of academic procrastination,time perspective was also an important variable influencing academic delay ofgratification.(5) Academic delay played a full intermediary role in time perspective andacademic procrastination, the indirect impact of each time perspective factor onacademic procrastination through academic delay were specifically different. SEMmulti-group comparison found: The model of time perspective, academic delay andacademic procrastination had inter-disciplinary validity; there was not a remarkablemoderating effect of major on three variables.
