Zhang Jie’s “Sui Han Tang Poetry Notes” is considered to be an extremelyimportant Poetry books in Song Dynasty. Be different from with the previous Noteson Poetry of discretionary system, his work is more theoretical and systematic. In themeantime,view from the specific poetics thoughts and poetry criticism of Zhang Jie,the works showed obviously tendency of praising highly tang poetry.“Sui Han Tang Poetry Notes” has distinct poem gist and conscious aestheticconsciousness. In the ideological content, it put the traditional Poetic Theories ofConfucianism in the first place, advocated Confucian Doctrine, reiterated theconception of “Poetry to Expressing Aspirations” and “Thought ofJustice”.Combined with the poetics viewpoint of “Mao Shi Xu” that wrote in handynasty, Zhang Jie regulated the related contents of poems. In terms of aesthetic, heformulated the theories about flavor and spirit of poems, by means of such poeticcategory as “Yun”,“Wei”,“Qi”, etc, and these constructed Zhang Jie’s aestheticsthought about Tang Dynasty’s poetry.“Sui Han Tang Poetry Notes”has very strong real specific aim.When Zhang Jiewrote his theory works, Southern Song Dynasty faced with many troubles from insideand outside, the political environment was very dangerous. But the flame ofpatriotism in the poetry works was ebbing away, because of the repression that fromthose who favors making peace. Jiangxi poetry school overemphasized poetictechniques, that cause the whole poetic circle slump. In order to get rid of thedifficulty, Zhang Jie advocated Confucian Doctrine, emphasized the social functionof poetry, and established the classical status of Du Fu.Zhang Jie gave a high evaluation to poets lived in the Han Wei periods andprosperous Tang-dynasty. Du Fu’s poems were considered to be the highest paragonof the Tang Dynasty’s poetry.“Sui Han Tang Poetry Notes”showed the obvious inclination of “Pro-Tang and De-Song”. Zhang Jie took a critical attitude towardsSong poetry, especially the works created by Su Shi and Huang Tingjian. The poemsof Li Bai, Du Fu and the other poets lived in Tang Dynasty were considered asreference. Then he investigated and found the difference between Tang poetry andSong poetry. Although his theory was suspected as taking a part for the whole, it wasstill an indispensable component in the history of controversy between Tang poetryand Song poetry. It has great significance in the history of literary and literarytheories after Song dynasty.
