Tess of the d’Urbervilles which is a great tragedy of Thomas Hardy is always loved by the worldwide readers. In the novel, Hardy vividly sculptured a kind and innocent girl, Tess is just like the daughter of the nature, the goddess or a visionary essence of woman, the queen of the human beings. Although she loses her purity and becomes a murderer, still, the author bravely abandoned secular concept and praised her as a woman with purity and innocence, but Tess is undoubtedly a tragedy in both body and spirit, which was caused by her society, her family, her group, but mostly because of her character.Maggie:A girl of the Streets is the first naturalistic novel of America. The author Stephen Crane is regarded as the pioneer of American naturalism. The heroin of the novel, Maggie was born in a very poor family in the slum, the father is an irresponsible smoker, and the mother is a typical vixen in the slum. What is quite different from the environment is Maggie’s innocence and sensitization. She was deceived, refused and cursed, and that caused her tragedy.Both of the two heroines are the victims of life, they experienced the similar families, character, and social environment, which influenced their life. Both of the two authors focus on the fate of the two girls. This essay is trying to compare the two heroines, and analyzes the similarity and difference of their character which led to their tragic fate.
