The Yao, which is one of China’s55ethnic minority groups, has gradually formed a unique ethnic costume style in the last five thousand years. The statistics data show that Yao have more one hundred kinds of the ostentatious costumes, which is very unique in our Chinese ethnic minority groups, making it worth us to study. However, there have little papers and books on the clothing culture of Yao. Additionally, the breadth and depth of these researches are still at a preliminary stage, and there has rarely research on the application of Yao’s ethnic costumes for the modern fashion design.After investigating the ethnic minority group of Fan Yao (Called Bunu Yao by themselves) in the Bama Yao Autonomous Country, Guangxi Autonomous region, the paper will study the traditional ethnic costumes of the Bunu Yao and explore the application of the Bunu Yao’s costumes on the modern fashion design and its derivate production by its constitutions, patterns, aesthetic and craft.In summary, this study will not only enriches the academic research of the Yao’ costumes, but also provides design elements for the more and more popular ethnic style in the modern fashion design, which no doubt have of great real role and positive significance for inheriting and carrying forward the culture of the traditional costumes of Chinese ethnic minorities.
