Under the influence of Western language teaching theories, teaching Chinese asa foreign language was established as an independent subject in1970s. As alanguage contact phenomena which commonly exists in bilingual or multilingualenvironment, code switching inevitably emerges in the classroom of teachingChinese as a foreign language. It provides new perspectives for the theoretical studyof teaching Chinese as a foreign language. As a subject widely concerned andstudied in recent years, code switching has been deeply analyzed and discussed fromdifferent aspects and angles by experts and scholars in various disciplines. Especiallyin linguistics, scholars have conducted a large number of researches fromperspectives of sociolinguistics, syntax, discourse analysis, and psychology. With thegrowth of China’s comprehensive strength, teaching Chinese as a second language isundergoing a booming development. This article explores the educational practice ofteaching Chinese as a foreign language and refers to related theories of foreignlanguage education and previous studies of code switching in the practice ofteaching Chinese as a foreign language. Based on the investigation of actualeducational practice, this article tries to solve specific problems that emerge inapplying code switching into teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and to providea reference for scholars and teachers who are involved in teaching Chinese as aforeign language.
