As a novelist, E. M. Forster is an important person in English modern literature and even theworld English literature. A Passage to India is the most famous work of Forster, which isbased on his own experience and feelings in India. This novel has long been paid attention toand studied as Forster’s masterpiece. Forster is a writer from realism to modernism, and thereare both realistic and modernistic factors in his works. This thesis makes a further study onthe themes based on the previous studies of this novel. It discloses the themes of the novelfrom the exterior to the interior from the aspects of realism and modernism, which helps thereaders have a deeper understanding of the themes of this novel, the background of that time,the writer himself and his thought. It will also inspire the readers to think more of Forster andhis works. The fusing of realistic themes and modernistic themes reflects the reality, andshows Forster’s sympathy to the Indians and his resentment to the English, and alsoanticipates the bright future between the English and Indians. This thesis guides readers howto deal with interpersonal relationship, and tells them that sincerity, equality and freedom arethe key factors of interpersonal relationship. It is guidance to interpersonal relationship.
