Abstract/Summary:
This study focuses on the perceptions of Chinese university students whostudy English as a foreign language in some Chinese universities. In particular, itpertains to influences found between teacher-student relationship and Englishteaching effectiveness in China. Through a survey study of a sample of Chineseuniversity students the author explores the significance that the role of theteacher-student relationship plays in university English teaching effectiveness, withthe goal of discovering the relationships desired by students in their English learningexperiences. Ultimately, he is trying to develop a practical schema of teacher-studentrelationship for university EFL teachers and to contribute to issues of teacherdevelopment in Chinese universities. Based on the initial literature review, thisresearch aims to answer three questions:a. How does teacher-student relationship affect EFL teaching in Chineseuniversities?b. What kind of teacher-student relationships perceived by students will benefitEFL teaching in Chinese universities?c. What is expected of teachers and students in order to develop suchrelationships?Based on the findings of this study, the author outlines eight qualities that aneffective EFL teacher should possess, which can function not only as a guideline forEFL teachers in Chinese universities to follow, but also one way to understandChinese university students. The findings from this study suggest it is necessary that EFL teachers inChinese universities should involve their students into the teaching and learning process and improve their teaching in response to students’ needs. This study also suggests that Chinese universities establish a teacherdevelopment system where EFL teachers improve their teaching methodology andexchange information. The thesis employs SETE, i.e. student rating, as a new criterion for therelationship between English teachers and students, and teaching effectiveness. It isthe most effective way. It expresses students’ feedback, matters to teachers’professional development program.
