John Irving is one of the most important contemporary writers of American fiction. His novels are very popular all around the world and each of his fictions is the best-sell on the board. Most of the studies admit that John Irving is a very excellent post-modernism writer. Actually, John Irving’s novels are more than common post-modern novels.This thesis is tying to category John Irving’s novels as metafiction. Actually John Irving expresses his own view of metaficion through his works. He incorporates the techniques of metafictional narrative associated with the New Fiction while preserving the integrity of the story, non-flat figures, and describing of environment. Using basic theory of metafiction, this thesis explores the artistic characteristics of John Irving’s metafiction. The first chapter argues the subject of metafiction:expose the untruth of the fiction and the process of incorporate narrative associated with comments. This part is finished by concluding John Irving’s situation of fictions. The second chapter discusses the basic narrative strategies and techniques, including exposure narrative traces, parody, and collage which are used by John Irving in his metafiction. The last part summarize the fictional world of John Irving is a multivalent one which operates on moral, intellectual, and emotional planes. John Irving’s metafiction contains traditional as well as contemporary fictional modes creates his own aesthetics of accessibility.
