This paper is intended to discuss Gulliver’s Travels in the perspective of Freudianpsychoanalysis. By discussing the relation between Swift and Gulliver, Freud’sdaydream theory can be again confirmed while the personality of Swift is furtherunderstood. The daydream theory is used to analyze the novel. The life of Swift andGulliver are compared in order to prove that Swift is in most cases the archetype ofGulliver. Several cases are studied to prove that Swift is realizing his dream whileother cases are listed to prove that Swift is rationalizing his fears and hatredthroughout the novel-writing. Thus his wishes are secretly realized without risk. Andthen the controversy of Swift being a misanthrope is discussed. This paper tries torationalize that Swift is not a misanthrope, which should be innovative.
