The Semantic Comparison Of Dimensional Adjectives ’(?)’ And ’深/浅’ In Korean And Chinese

Dimensional adjectives, words describing the amount of space of shape objects or their parts, play an indispensable role in Korean and Chinese languages.On the basis of previous researches by other people, this dissertation makes a contrastive analysis of the dimensional adjectives "(?)" in Korean and“深/浅”in Chinese in their conceptual meanings and metaphorical meanings respectively, and further presents their semantic similarities and differences, as well as studies their linguistic asymmetry. Due to the differences in cultural background, cognitive mode and language structure, these two languages present similarities and differences in their forms.This dissertation is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction, briefly presenting the research purpose and significance of this paper, past studies, research methods and subject.The second chapter is the contrastive study of the conceptual meanings of the dimensional adjectives"(?)"and“深/浅”Based on the explanations in the present dictionaries, this part gives a detailed analysis and comparison of the basic meanings of "(?)" in Korean and“深/浅”in Chinese by studying their meaning property, as well as discusses their linguistic asymmetry.The third chapter focuses on the metaphorical meanings of the dimensional adjectives"(?)" and“深/浅”With the research results in Chapter2, this part collects all the metaphorical meanings shown in dictionaries and makes detailed study and contrastive analysis of"(?)"/深”and"(?)"/浅”,as well as their opposite relations. Also, here the extended forms and features of metaphorical meanings of the dimensional adjectives"(?)"and“深/浅”are analyzed.The fourth chapter concludes this dissertation, and points out the deficiencies in the research and the possible direction for future study.
