| English nominalization is a noun phrase whose meaning is the expression of a verbal clause (subject-less verb phrase). From the perspective of syntax, this paper analyzes its grammatical sequences, Case distributions, semantic relations of internal compositions and syntactic properties. This paper attempts to use syntactic theories to explain the generation process of English nominalization, and then to explore this kind of structure’s theoretical basis in existence and the relationship between English nominalization and its corresponding verbal clause.Nominalization is not only the result of morphological transformation, but also of syntactic transformation. The object of this paper is a kind of noun phrase (NP), which expresses the same meaning as a verbal clause or a subject-less verb phrase. This paper concludes and analyzes three kinds of head noun of English nominalization, and then summarizes the typical structure of English nominalization as "Poss.+Nv+PP", and the other two types as "Poss.+Nv" and "Det.+Nv+PP". Through analysis of the three types of English nominalization’s grammatical sequences and Case distributions, this paper draws its syntactic distribution rule, i.e., the relationship between English nominalization and the verbal clause expressing the same meaning is corresponding and similar. Next, this paper analyzes the three types of English nominalization’s semantic relations of internal compositions, and finds that in general, the relationship between English nominalization and the corresponding verbal clause or subject-less verb phrase in this aspect is similar, too. Through analysis, this paper clears English nominalization’s syntactic properties, i.e., DP structure, and finds that it has similarity with the maximum projection of sentence-TP structure. Finally, this paper attempts to use Distributional Morphology to explain the homology between the head noun of English nominalization and the head verb of the verbal clause, thus comes to the conclusion:English nominalization and the corresponding verbal clause (subject-less verb phrase) shows a parallel relationship in general. The body of this paper is divided into three parts:the first part defines the object of this paper and summarizes three types of structure on the basis of previous studies; the second part describes and analyzes the surface grammatical sequences and Case distribution of English nominalization; and the third part analyzes the semantic relations of internal compositions of English nominalization structure, clears its syntactic properties, and explains the relationship between English nominalization and its corresponding verbal clause (subject-less verb phrase). |
