Chinese and western traditional philosophies always apply the ontology of pursuing the origin of world as its theoretical prerequisite. As Engels pointed out, all philosophies prior to the Marxism philosophy were developed around the key fundamental question about "what is the origin of matter and spirit". Certainly, due to the difference between China and the West on various aspects, such as humanistic environment, social&historical conditions, etc., the ontology shows respective different characteristics in theoretical contents, mode of thinking, way of world explanation, etc. between Chinese and western traditional philosophies. The paper, through finding out the similarities and differences between Chinese and western traditional philosophies, points out the similarity and otherness in terms of the philosophical world view, understand the historical development track of Chinese and western civilization, and receive revelations therefrom, so as to provide the theoretical basis for the development of Chinese modern society. At present, the Chinese philosophical circle continues a new round of comparative research on Chinese and western philosophies, and forms a new academic research environment. The research aims to demonstrate the comparability and determine the intension and extension of comparative research after defining their respective intension of Chinese and western philosophies accurately; furthermore, in terms of the academic research, it requests to avoid the so-called "Chinese after western" trend of applying Chinese philosophy to western philosophical doctrine, and also prevent the extreme practices of "Chinese saying expressed in Chinese language only" and "western saying expressed in western language only" In terms of the Chinese and western comparative research on philosophical ontology, some research achievements have come forth since the beginning of the21st century; however, the academic world hasn’t got to a common view on the intension of ontology, which is one of the difficulties of this topic and that is why the paper carries out the research with respect to the general idea of ontology. From the aspect of philosophical theory, the traditional philosophy indeed tends to emphasize the explanation of world, but after all, it acts as the precondition of world view for the development of human civilization. During the period of pre-industrial society, China was no worse than the west in terms of the progress of human civilization, or even better; however, at the era of industrial society, the civilization of China and even the whole oriental world lagged far behind that of western countries, and the beginning of industrial society in China was over200years late than that of the west. Such peculiar historical development track of Chinese and western civilization reflects the character that the Chinese and western philosophical world views have played a role in their respective social civilization development from the aspect of ontology. Nowadays, the world has stepped into the information age, while China has shortened the gap between Chinese and western civilization to several decades under the guidance of Chinese Marxism after only half-century efforts. The comparative research on ontology of Chinese and western traditional philosophies has important theoretical significance and practical value to both the further progress of localization of Marxism in China and the further speed-up of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.
