This thesis mainly investigates and researches the degree adverb "Hen/Tai(很/太)"from the synchronic and the diachronic aspects. From the synchronic aspects, itdiscusses assembled components, syntactic function, sentence selection, externalforms, and try to use construction grammar to analysis the "Hen/Tai+X" semanticfeatures and constraints. From the diachronic aspects, it discourses the diachronicevolution of the semantic features, assembled components and syntactic function. The entire thesis is composed of five parts in addition to the introduction and theconclusion. The first chapter is an introduction, which mainly gives a brief comment on thecurrent study situation and the background, and an introduction of the relevantconditions, such as the purpose of the research topic, the study methods and datasources. In the second chapter, the author discusses the synchronic situation of the degreeadverbs "Hen/Tai(很/太)".The research finds out that there is some unification anopposition between" Hen(很)"and "Tai(太)"on the phrase and sentence aspects.(I)Onthe phrase aspects,"Hen/Tai(很/太)"can modify adjectives, psychological verbs,character-projecting verbs, nature-implying verbs, verb-object constructionmodifier-head construction, and paratactic construction. And that the more abstractand distinct on the semantics and character, the more easy to modify adverb"Hen/Tai(很/太)".At the same time,"Hen/Tai(很/太)"can’t combine with the tenseauxiliary word "Zhe(着),Le(了),Guo(过)".But on the whole,"Hen"(很)is more easyto combine with other words, such as "Tai(太)"can’t modify special number phrase,"V-C" format verb phrase and so on. Moreover, there is some difference between"Hen(很)"and "Tai(太)"on the order of priority when they modify thesecomponent.(II)On the sentence aspects, there is also some unification an oppositionon the sentential form, syntactic function, sentence selection between "Hen(很)"and"Tai(太)".For example, there is some opposition such as "Le(了)","De(的)","Guoyu(过于)" on the sentential form. There is also some opposition such as can ornot act as adverbial modifier on the syntactic function and enter or not intoexclamatory sentence, imperative sentence,"Ba(把)/Bei(被)"sentence on the sentenceselection. Additionally, there is also some unification an opposition at the combination ability and the order of priority of "Hen/Tai(很/太)+x" on the syntacticfunction. In the third chapter, the author analysis the unification and opposition in thesyntactic collocation, syntactic function from semantic perspective, the constructionalmeaning of "Hen/Tai(很/太)+X" and apply the construction grammar theory toanalyze "HenTai+X" semantic features and constraints. When the semantic features ofthe composition "X" matches with "Hen/Tai(很/太)",the "hen/tai+X" is harmoniousand develop an instance relation. On the contrary, if the semantic features does notmatch, the constructional meaning of "Hen/Tai(很/太) coerces the prototypicalmeaning of "X" and make it acquire possibility semantic features to attain thesemantic harmony. Furthermore, when these components which contain the same orsimilar semantic features come into "Hen/Tai+X" construction, they form afamily-type network. In the fourth chapter, the author investigates "Hen/Tai(很/太)"from thediachronic aspects and outline the evolution track of the semantic features, assembledcomponents and syntactic function."Hen" experiences the grammaticalization whichevolves from the verb to the degree adverbs. However,"tai" develops stably and it hasthe use of the degree adverbs from the pre-Qing dynasty."Hen/Tai(很/太) present the"prolifically" and "complicately "trend on the assembled components and syntacticfunction, but the whole grammar character tend to stably develop. The fifth part is conclusion, it summarizes the main contents of the thesis andpointes out the article deficiencies and the part that required further study.
