The Research Of Taiwan Editorial Cartoon Awards Works(1991-1997)

Editorial cartoon, also knows as news cartoon, a kind of pictures themed by news event, is a significant form of news comment, which reprint the emerging and worth-spreading news facts.Editorial cartoon of Taiwan has a history of sixty years, playing a vital role in the journalistic enterprise. After entering this century, this heat has slow down, as well as its political and social commentary function.This paper chooses the News Award of Wushunwen(News Cartoon Award) and Cartoon Golden Eagle Award as research objects. Eighty-six pieces of works between the year1991-1997were selected as final samples.This paper adopts the method of Textual analysis. The research consists of three levels:first level is to do the study of cartoon expressions, including the drawing elements、 picture symbol meaning and artistically expressing.The second level is to refine and analyses the cartoon themes. It reveals distribution pattern of the samples by quantitative research so as to lead the readers to comprehend the editorial cartoon and reflect its most-centered essence.The third level is to analyses cartoon’s textual function.As a form of news comment; editorial cartoon inevitably has its own distinctive trends and criticism. Measured by this point of view, its maturity falls into four aspects:explanation, publicity, comment and guidance respectively. The combination of this four aspects gives arise to the measurement of maturity in this period.In all, this article does the study of the awarded works in editorial cartoon, analyzing its phenomenon in social circumstances, political power and so on, doing the research of its problems such as living conditions, developmental status and so on. At the same time, a new research direction for the editorial cartoon is likely to be found by this article, future promoting the value of this field to expand its academic meaning.
