Research On Social Activities And Patriotic Enlightenment Thoughts Of Hong Bizhou

The paper is about social activities and patriotic enlightenment thoughts throughout Hong Bizhou’s life. Although he made important contribution to Korean patriotic enlightenment movement, he’s never been taken attention as the other contemporary patriotic thinkers or social activists for various reasons. The paper is to explain the figure and his thoughts objectively by showing some new historical data, hoping to provide additional to this research field.Hong Bizhou(1857-1917), born in the end of Chosun Dynasty. The society of Korea began to change from traditional feudalism to modern society in his growth process. The change meets the own needs of Korean society on the one hand, but on the other hand, it meets the needs of capitalism expansion more. Facing the reality of social unrest, he began to take part in all kinds of social activities for searching a way of saving the nation and the people.He participated multiform social activities with time changing, such as Donghak Peasant Revolution, eliminating the disadvantages of bureaucrat as a prefecture chief, fighting against Japan by sending up memorials to the ruler, rebuking the crimes of aggressors by going to Japan twice, assassinating traitors, participating progressive groups and made some articles to advocate patriotic enlightenment thoughts. He had been in the research of political struggles history and wrote The Daito Poems with Zhang Zhiyuan to propagate classical poetry. He also did some educational movements and trained lots of talents.Although the social activities he participated in were in different styles, all of them were carried out according to temporal social condition. He got an ideological system for his own in this activities, which can be concluded in three categories, patriotic thoughts, political thoughts and education thoughts, and each of them can be expressed in different aspects. The formation of his thoughts is influenced by growth background, social environment and Liang Qichao. That’s the reason why he can became an advanced and responsible intellectual standing in the forefront of the times.
