Musical Analysis Of The Typical Title Music Mazeppa

Franz Liszt is one of the important representatives of romantic music in the19th century, and known as "the king of piano". His Mazeppa, as a typical title music which had been wroten by poetic inspiration, not only occupies important significance in the embodiment of Liszt’s writing style, and as a person who have piano performance art research, it’s an essential and classic repertoire which we must play and practice, amostly it’s helpful to grasp Liszt’s music skills and emotional level.This thesis takes my experience about how to study Liszt correlation knowledge, how to practice year by year and how to play the super Etude Mazeppa, combined with composer’s music style as well as my years of piano learning experience for musicology analysis. Firstly, the preface part summarizes the research significance and current status of Mazeppa, and introduces the main research content and methods.The thesis has three chapters. In chapter1, in order to analyse this repertoire better, the thesis first discussed the title music from social background and cultural background to the emergence and development of the title music, and then introduced the characteristics of title music styles, and finally briefly Liszt’s life and related content of Mazeppa which was wroted by Victor Hugo, has the same name.The second chapter is the center part of this thesis. In order to understand and play the repertoire more clearly and accuratly, according to the structure of the work, this article analyzed five parts (introduction-theme-variations and inserting part-reprodution-end) from its harmony, rhythm, mode, musical form and so on. The main idea is analyze the methods through some technical difficulty, for example, how to play the piano with a light, heavy, firm, delicate, etc touch, how to practice octave, and how to stamp on the pedal and so on. On the other hand, the writer read a long poem, which is named Mazeppa as well and writied by V.Hugo (a famous French author).The poem describes that Mazeppa suffered from the painful process, it has the same meaning with the work. So with the writer’s felling and experience during studying process, it’s helpful to analyze expression of feeling and change of emotion between every part sensitively.The third chapter is music connotation as well as the social and historical analysis. This chapter firstly analyzed far-reaching effects for the repertoire, combined with Liszt’s life experience and his character, and then researched the deep spiritual connotation of Mazeppa. It’s helpful for us to have a higher level of understanding to this work. At last, according to my playing experience, the chapter extented and elucidated the playing skills and expression of feeling of the repertoire. It has significant meaning for playing other piano works especially romantic piano works.Through analysis, we concluded that the title music is the birth of a kind of music genre in certain social and historical conditions, and Mazeppa with the historical trend, then reflect the romantic style and also reveal great charm of personality of composer. No doubt, this works is extremely successful not only in the choice of genre,but also in the choice of subject matter. The works showed us the creation and inner emotional expression of Liszt clearly, he also showed us the title music as a novel music form perfectly. It played an important role in promoting the development and maturity of the title music. On the other hand, through playing Liszt’s piano works for several years, the writer not only understands the composer and his style of composing intensively, but also summarizes many effective methods during searching related data. In a word, it’s significant and helpful to play other works in the future.
