The opera, Cavalleria Rusticana, was the famous work which made him success by Italian composer, Mascagni Pietro, and it was also one of the outstanding works to present Verismo period in Europe at the end of19th century. The libretto was composed, based on the novel of Italian literati Giovanni Verga, which was a tragedy reflecting personalities and social reality deeply. Mascagni modeled a series of live characters, among whom the heroine, Santuzza was the most highlighting character. The author in this essay tries best to summarize artistic characteristic of Santuzza completely and specifically, taking Santuzza as the research. At the same time, the author also discusses how to model this character.The author in this essay excavates the image fascination of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana by discussing Mascagni and his opera Cavalleria Rusticana, Santuzza’s opera image and musical image, and the main aria of Santuzza. The main body of the essay is divided into4parts: part1is the brief introduction of Mascagni and his works; part2presents the background of Cavalleria Rusticana, main characters in the opera, and plot introduction; part3specifically discusses modeling of opera image and musical image of Santuzza, and deeply probes the characters in aspects of music and opera; part4is the discussion of main aria of Santuzza’s, and analyzes specifically performance skills and artistic processing of one piece of aria and two pieces of duets in details. This essay illustrates the image modeling of Santuzza, which supplies theoretical reference to make audiences reproduce character image fully. At the same time, it also provides vocal learners with full understanding of Mascagni and his work Cavalleria Rusticana and opera image of Santuzza in the opera.
