As a famous painting artist of the older generation, Mo Po’s (1915-1996) artistic career and works plays an important role in the20th century Chinese art history. The paper mainly discusses the creative process of "the primitive painting" as the main style of his works. Firstly, define "the primitive painting" works from the contemporary critics’words, it is Mo Po’s early artistic activities that is taken as a foothold to discuss the formation of the three basic context of "the primitive painting" ideas; Secondly, classify the subjects and make a careful study of the works by the way of formal analysis; Finally, the paper expounds the aesthetic significance and the historical value of "the primitive painting". The ending come to the conclusion:Mo Po’s "the primitive painting" is guided by Mao Zedong’s Yan’an Talks on Art and Literature, and it is a artistic style which is formed in the long-term artistic practice and accumulation. It absorbs the ancient esthetics and the elements of the traditional folk art, Mo Po also projects his own blazing feelings about life and art into the woks,"the primitive painting" has become a symbol of the ages, the thick, unadorned and simple aesthetic significances are very inspirational for present painters. What’s more important, not only dose "the primitive painting" suit for Mo Po’s works, but also make a appropriate explanation for Chinese art history and reality, and it opens a feasibility telling way about the new value framework and the expression system for the art history of New China.
