A Sociolinguistic Study On Humorous Lines In Feng Xiaogang’s Comedy Movies

If we pay attention to all the researches, both from home and abroad, from asociolinguistic perspective, most of the researches focus on conventional phenomena.However, unconventional linguistic behaviors do really exist in reality. The research onunconventional linguistic behaviors can also enrich our studies, too. Furthermore, thoseirregular or conventional linguistic variations can reveal the close impact of a variety ofsocial factors. The variation of humorous character lines in Feng’s comedy movies aresuch unconventional linguistic behaviors. The study has collected some populardialogues in Feng’s comedy films as linguistic corpora. From the theory ofsociolinguistics, this thesis has made qualitative analysis from the several aspects ofphonology, vocabulary, style and context and also studied the humorous lines as well asthe distinct humor effects in Feng’s comedy movies.The character lines as the analysis objectives, this thesis, has made the theory oflanguage variation, language change and discourse analysis in sociolinguistics as thetheory framework, and has analyzed them in four aspects in qualitative method: thelevel of phonology, including the use of homophony, pause and dialect; the level ofvocabulary, including abbreviation, slang and buzzword; the level of context whichmainly analyze the character lines that deviate from the character identity and discussthe illogical lines causing special humor. Later, the thesis introduces Feng’s comedymovie charms. As regards the charms, the lines express subtle emotions and produceeffective communicative effects such as preventing face from being threatened andbeing sagacious. At the same time, this thesis has summed up the limitation of the studyand some suggestions for future research are also mentioned in the end.Feng’s comedy movies have a distinctive style, the humor mainly come from thecharacter lines. Therefore, analyzing the construction art of Feng’s humorous lines fromthe aspect of microscopic language level, not only has grasped the language creationtechniques of Feng’s humorous lines clearly, but also provided a new creation idea andtheoretical paradigm for comedy movie lines. The multiple perspectives, multi-layeredresearch of humorous language in Feng’s comedy movies have broaden the language research view in Feng’s comedy movies. At the same time, this thesis as a case study,has used the linguistic theory to analyze humorous language not only enhance theconvincing ability of linguistic theory but also expand the scope of theory application,at the same time, enrich research achievements in humor theory.
