The main content of this thesis is the common expressions of approximate number in Mandarin Chinese, and its application in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The author summarized the most common expressions of approximate number in Mandarin Chinese, described its own features from three aspects:syntactic distribution, semantic expression and pragmatic function. Based on the practice of textbook compilation and practical teaching in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the article concluded and analyzed foreign students’errors, and raised some relative suggestions.This thesis is divided into five parts:the introduction mainly introduced the achievement and limitation about the expressions of approximate number in Mandarin Chinese, as well the research target, content and methods. The first part analyzed the grammar attributions, semantic explanations and pragmatic functions of approximate number in Mandarin Chinese, put forward that "approximate number" belongs to the semantic category, and indicated a general, obscure quantity. The second part discussed some common expressions of approximate number in Mandarin Chinese from the aspects of syntactic distribution, semantic expression, and pragmatic function, especially the approximate number words "duo","lai","ba","zuoyou","shangxia","qianhou", revealed its similarities and differences. The third part based on the present situation of second language teaching, investigated the current textbook and the foreign students’ study situation of expression of approximate number, discussed the reason of errors and raised some teaching suggestions. The fourth part summarized the advantages and the disadvantages of this thesis.
