As a representative of female gothic novels in20th century, Jamaica Inn marks the beginning of Daphne Du Maurier’s experiment with new style in feminist writing. In this novel, based on female gothic theory, she shows her feminist standpoint. Though there are many theses analyzing this novel from the perspective of female gothic, they seldom make analysis of the author’s implicit female consciousness in the view of female gothic elements. This paper will use female gothic theory and focuses on female gothic metaphors, female gothic atmosphere and female gothic happy closure to elaborate how these strategies present the author’s female consciousness-her pursuit of freedom, equality and love.
