Huang Tingjian was one of the greatest poets in the Parnassus of the Song Dynasty,whose works promoted the transition of poetic style from the Tang Dynasty to Song, and alsosetted the poetic tone of Song. Influenced by Huang Tingjian, Jiangxi Poetry School becamethe largest and most impactive poetry school. In recent years,people are more and more awareof the important role of Huang Tingjian’s theories of poesy which were based on poetrywriting.Huang Tingjian’s poetic theories were develpped in long-term study and creativepractice,those approaches and opinions of poesy found in Huang’s letters, inscriptions andsome poemes seemingly scattered, but this could not disturb the integrity of his poetictheories,and conversely it was a systematic and academic system.Huang Tingjian’s poetrytheory is one of the most important parts of Chinese poetics, he found and followed a nativeline, even though his theory was based on poetic achievements and poetic theories ofpredessors espacially poets in the Tang Dynasty.At the time in the Northern Song Dynasty, Confucinism changes and integration ofConfucinism, Buddhism and Tao came into being, and there was a voice of returning tocuhural tradition from worshipping Du Fu and learning from Han Yu. With the ideologicalbackground and under the deep influence from his learned family, Huang Tingjian choose tocase Du Fu and Hang Yu, and finally formed his own poetics theory. Huang’s theoryinherited from Du Fu’s poetics which was one important source of his theory placed greatemphasis on artistic law, taste of senses, pursuit of creative concept, and was full ofdistinctive personalities and characteristics of the times. The diction, syntax, rules,allusions, were covered by the law of his poetry. Huang’s great learning, moral cultures andpersonal qualities made his poems taste so rational. After a lot of creative practice, his pursuitof appreciating implications was getting higher and higher. The thoery of Huang Tingjian hadfar-reaching impact on Song poems, Jiangxi Poetry School,and enven the Song poetics. Inspite of the controversies over the poetry propositions of Huang and Jiangxi Poetry School,Huang had already occupied a position of prestige in the history of the Song-dynasty poetics.A general survey of the poetics theory of Huang Tingjian reveals that to imitate theancients and being innovative are its distinctive features, and it had achieved the perfection of“Poetry with Wording, Argument and Scholarship”. In brief, Huang Tingjian’s theory ofpoesy plays an essential role in the developing of Song poetry and poetics, and is one important part of the theory of literary criticism in China, especially Chinese poetrycomposition theory.
