Bel Canto was introduced to China along with the return of the foreign students in the mid of1920s. The Korean Fang Chushan, an early Chinese Bel Canto singer, was also influenced by the culture, which made her have a deep love for Bel Canto. With advantaged voice and inherent gift for performance, she became one of the singers who took part in the international vocal competitions and won honor for their country. Her unique performance was different with other singers. Besides her original singing, she added dances and performances while singing. Early in1956, a journalist of People’s Daily wrote in the article that the Korean singer Fang Chushan’s performance The Song of the Girl was with good voice, dance, performance, stage manners and figure.This paper studies Fang Chushan’s singing methods, various vocal tracks and abundant emotional expression. It summarizes her great contribution to use western singing for reference, as well as to inherit, develop and promote Korean vocal arts. It is based on the study of personal life of Fang Chushan and her songs, the analysis of formation and development in her singing style, the conclusion of her unique singing methods, the discussion of her successful art experiences, the evaluation of her contribution in Korean vocal music and even the contemporary Chinese vocal arts development and concludes the progress of Korean vocal music as well. This paper has a practical significance in protecting, inheriting and developing our Chinese varied national vocal music.
