Gong Yitu(1835~1893), style name:Shaowen, art-name:Airen, Hanjing, an important bibliophile in Fujian of Qing Dynasty, XXXXXXXXXX, which collected many writings from the Fujian scholars of the past. During the period of Republic Government, Gong Liyi, the twelfth grandson of Gong Yitu, inventoried the book collections, and compiled a list called <Concise directory of Wushishan Room’s bibliotheca> which referenced to Gong Yitu’s<Directory of Wushishan Room’s bibliotheca> when he was in Japan. Later, Gong Liyi compiled<Directory of Datong Building’s bibliotheca>. These two directories are major information for study and research about Fujian modern books collecting history. In the late of Qing Dynasty, there were two famous old scholars in the City of Fuzhou, Gong Yitu and Chen Baochen, who had been referred as "Chen of South and Gong of North", as they owned Datong Building in the north of the city and Cangqu Building in the south of the city, respectively. However, Chen was famous as he had been emperor’s mentor, which brought him more attentions. And so his collections of books are now kept by Fujian Normal University, and Cangqu Building is preserved so far. On the other hand, Datong Building was utterly destroyed after the founding of People’s Republic of China, more than half of the books kept by it were spread across Taiwan and Japan, and the rest are now preserved by the Fujian Library and Fujian Normal University. Gong Yitu and his collections are seems not taken seriously. With helps and guidance of my mentor and friends, I had thorough investigated documents and literatures from Fujian Library, including Gong Yitu’s writing, collections, records of his family, accounts of himself from his families, friends and colleagues, and the writing of his friends, which allows me to rigorous analyze his life, and expound the activities, origins, characteristics and whereabouts of his books collections. Hopefully, my research may provide some contributions for Fujian modern books collecting history, and helpful information for relative researchers and readers.
