Freshmen adaptation has been a hot topic of modern researchers. Nearly20years, researches of freshmen adaptation successively appear. These studies show that college students’self-concept level and choice have varying degrees of impact on adaptation of freshmen. Self-concept is a relative stable system of ego-recogniaztion and self-evaluation of a person while involued in socialization. It contains one’s moral character, personality, interpersonal relationship and the position in the social environment. Self-concept affects individual’s emotion and behavior. Coping style refers to the individual to face different stressors, coping methods, means or strategies.This study adopt random sampling to investigate650college freshmen, get592valid questionnaires. This study adopt Self Concept Scale prepared by the psychologist H.Fitts, Coping Style Questionnaire revised by Jihua Xiao and Freshmen School Adjustment Scale revised by Jun Chen to discuss the relationship of self-concept, coping style and school adjustment.Study obtained the following results:1.The situation of a freshmen self-conceptDimensions of freshmen self-concept are in the secondary level, male and female students’self-concept score has no significant difference. But in physiological self-dimensions, boys’score are higher than girls’. One-child self-concept level was significantly higher than non-only child’.2. The situation of freshmen coping styleFreshmen use more active coping styles of problem-solving and help, less fantasy, avoidance, self-blame and other negative coping. Male and female students’coping style score has no significant difference. In the selection of mature coping styles, one-child coping style level and non-only child coping style level has no significant difference. In the selection of immature coping styles and mixed coping styles, one-child score is less than non-only child.3.The situation of freshmen adaptation to schoolThe situation of freshmen adaptation to school is overall good. But in the specific dimension, the adaptation to the environment of life and exchanges with adaptation is below the middle level. The situation of learning activities and emotional state is a good. The freshmen’s adaptation to school there is no gender difference, the situation of one-child adaptation is better than non-only child.4.The relationship of freshmen’s self-concept, coping style and school adaptation Freshmen self-concept and positive coping styles were positively correlated, and immature response to a negative correlation, and mixed response was not significantly correlated. We can use the self-criticism and the moral self jointly predict mature coping style, and use with self-criticism, physical self, family self jointly predict immature coping style, and use mixed coping style predict social self.Freshmen self-concept, and school adaptation was significantly related. In specific dimensions, the physical self, moral self, psychological self, family self, social self and school adaptation was significantly positively related. Self-criticism and school adjustment was a significant negative correlation. We can use mental self, family self, moral self, physical self jointly predict school adjustment, and self-self-criticism, moral self, psychological self, family self and physical self jointly predict the emotional state, and self-criticism, family self, psychological self, physical self jointly predict learning activities adaptation, and psychological self, self-criticism, social-self jointly predict adaptation to the environment, and the psychological self to predict exchanges to adaptation.Freshmen coping style and school adaptation was significantly related. Mature coping style and school adaptation was positively related.Immature coping styles and adaptation was negatively correlated. Mixed coping style and school adaptation was a positive correlation. We can use immature coping style and mature coping style to jointly predict school adaptation.5.Coping styles in college freshmen’s self-concept and school adjustment relations was the part of the intermediary role.Coping style played a part of the intermediary role in self-concept on school adaptation, physical self affect school adjustment partly by the immature coping styles, family self affect school adaptation partly by the immature coping styles, moral self affect school adaptation partly by mature coping styles, and social self affect the schools partly by the mixed coping styles.The results of this study will help the freshmen a better understanding of their own self-concept level and response mode. It can also explore the relationship of college students’ self-concept, coping style and the way for college students to adapt schools. The result will provide psychological basis for college mental health education, in order to take effective way to help freshmen to adapt college life more easily.
