This paper is devoted to the ecocritical analysis of two novels by Jack London, The Call of the Wild and White Fang. It studies the relationship between animals and nature, human beings and animals, human beings and nature, in order to seek for ecological harmony between human beings and nature. Then the author explores two novels in great detail to demonstrate London’s ecological ideas and his opinion on wilderness and civilization.Buck’s transformation reflects the author’s wish of leaving away from the suffocating city life and returning to live a simple life in wilderness. Buck and several of his masters are also depicted to show anthropocentrism and reflect Jack London’s understanding of anti-anthropocentrism. Human beings regard themselves as the center, dogs and other nonhuman beings are subject to be controlled and maltreated.Through the detailed analysis of texts, it is safe to say that deep ecological consciousness is reflected in the two novels. The author criticizes human beings’killing animals arbitarily and the human-centred views on dogs. This study on Jack London’s The Call of The Wild and White Fang can arouse the ecological consciousness of human beings. People are just one part of the ecosystem and can not live without the nature. To regard everything in the nature equally and respect them is beneficial both to the nature and human beings, which is like the friendship between dogs and their masters. To conclude, human beings should remember that no centre exists in the nature. The anthropocentrism should be abandoned. All creatures should co-exist in the world equally with dignity. In a word, human beings should deal with social problems by stressing the importance of wilderness, or nature, and ask people to hold an ecological view on wilderness and civilization in order to lead a meaningful life. |
