Research On The Creation Of The Nationalization In Opera"Mulan Psalm"

The Chinese Opera "Mulan Psalm" which is revised by the music composer Guan Xia and screenwriter Liu Lin from a traditional Chinese poem "Mulan" aims to show patriotism and national spirit of Chinese people and to reflect the aspiration of all human beings for peace and justice. This opera is a subtle combination of Chinese elements drawn from operas, traditional Chinese operas, dancing and folk instruments. The play makes a tremendous success to show audiences all around the world a hard yet soft, simple and peace-loving girl named Hua Mulan who joined the army by replacing her father. This dissertation gave discussion on the combination of the poem "Mulan" and chorus, the application of Chinese Yu Ju in Arioso and Aria, and the relationship between melody and lyrics based on the social background when the opera "Mulan Psalm" was composed, Chinese culture and professional background of the composer Guan Xia. This dissertation also analyzed the music structure, tuning, band composition, performance form, configuration of light and stage design to discuss the artistic treatment of "Mulan Psalm". This is the opera that provide rooms for the discussion of development of Chinese opera. The author of this dissertation dedicate to probe nationalization in "Mulan Psalm", which will shed light on the future of Chinese opera.
