Herbert Marcuse (19th July1898-29th July1979), a German-born American,is one of the most eminent radical philosopher of Frankfurt School, one of theinfluential Social Theorists, thinker and philosopher. His Social Critical Theorybrought him world fame as the most influential thinker of New Left Movementin America. His One-Dimensional Man: Studies in the Ideology of AdvancedIndustrial Society published in1964is the representative work of social criticaltheory which great influence on the western society.The prosperous economy and fast development of the Western world afterWWII did not draw Marcuse’s attention. Otherwise he focused on therelationship between the individual and the society in reality and revealed thenature of modern industrial society with sharp critique. He saw a new type oftotalitarian society which laid out a gradually intensified overall oppress,especially the spiritual side, on the people through the economy prosperity.Based on the practical and theoretical analysis of modern capitalist society heproposed a theory that science and technology is ideology which pointed out thatin fast developed industrial society ideology had already become a maingovernment tool. Critical ideology consists the core of Marcuse’s criticizes onmodern capitalist society.
