This article will focus on the different creative mindset of them. Themental quality of the artists is formed by the effect of the objective living environment and the subjectiveand physiological function of a multi-disciplinary role, including life experiences, religious beliefs andartistic accomplishment. According to the analysis based on the careful description of their life experienceand the resulting mental state portrayed, this paper aims at getting into their inner world, and finally settlingto immortal works which reflected their respective life and mentality. Standing on the height of human art, ittries to explore the necessary connection and internal rules of the living conditions, character traits andartistic expression of the artists. This article discusses the effect of the combination between the art and theirtragic lives, surveys the reason why two equally tragic life of an artist has a different creative mindset.Munch has an unhappy childhood, yet the unfortunate experience of Van Gogh’s is mainly in hisadulthood; Munch explored the dark, on the contrary, Van Gogh was in pursuit of light. Two differentattitudes towards life are strongly reflected in their respective works. In the environment which man canhardly be understood, the artist is the kind of person like this: would like to speak, but afraid that the mancould not hear; want to cry, but afraid of being heard by others. So their creation purpose have a commonground: they release emotions by using lines and color. Munch can not calmly face to a cruel life as abystander, so he attached to the expression of pain, despair and death which he experienced profoundly;Van Gogh can not abandon the pursuit of life, no matter how life pushed him into the dark, he alwaysopened a window for sunlight. They both chose colors and lines to release their own deep understanding oflife, but they moved toward the opposite theme. Standing on the edge of the hell equally, Munch struggledto jump into it, and then came back to tell the world of hell scene, however, Van Gogh closed his eyes andimagined the beauty of the paradise, and full of hope to tell the world what life is. By comparing theirrepresentatives, The Scream of Munch’s depicted the inner pain and fear through distorted lines while VanGogh’s "Sunflowers" drawing with bright colors revealed the jumping life. Both of them have unfortunate experiences and painful feelings which had been given vent to the works through the art of refiningsublimation. Munch trended to spotlight the fear of death and disease and hopelessness.
