African-American female writer, Toni Morrison, whose works mainly focus on African-Americans’violent world, pays special attention to their violent behaviors and goes deep into their inner world. She takes a fresh look at the black’s racial suffering and points out the historical and cultural reasons for their violent behaviors and states that they are facing many difficulties in the way of searching for self-identity. At the same time, she points the fact that violence is not the only way to resist and the non-violence is much more desirable. Her double identities, both in race and sex, make her have deep feelings and thoughts on African-Americans. Her novels accurately show a real-world life of them and break through the silent status of their culture from mainstream society.Based on The Bluest Eye, this thesis mainly focuses on the influence of white culture and shows the black’s resistance for the cultural hegemony by applying post-colonial theory. The resistance can be divided into two parts:the violent and non-violent measures. The violence occurs inside of African-Americans and it challenges the ruling orders of the current moral standard and legislation. The non-violence means the positive factors represented through their struggling for survival. It is different from the tradition one who mainly focuses on sit-in, fast, etc. Both of them are restricted to the self and mental aspects, which can be considered as a kind of self-consciousness:struggle and breakthrough. The effect is only confined to the black circle and not far beyond the white and white society. The African-Americans try to break through the bondage of white culture by taking violent arms and set up their new national tradition by taking non-violent arms. Both of them deliver their grim determination. At the same time, we should realize violence is not the appropriate way and non-violence is much softer and more available in the modern society.
