Flattery is a common linguistic phenomenon in daily life, and also a politeness speechact. Different from many other speech acts such as compliments and refusals, Chineseflatteries vary a lot no matter at the level of glossary or syntax, they are not as formulaic ascompliments. At the same time, Chinese flatteries are different from western flatteries on thereplies、topics and language forms. Therefore take Chinese flatteries on pragmatics, it meansthe production and use of flatteries has the close connection of cultures. Based on the Chinesepoliteness principles which Guriguo put forward, we sum up four politeness principles ofChinese flatteries. First, address principles. It includes the norms for social relationships andintimacy. Second, elegant principle. Third, modest principle. Finally, considerate principlewhich contains positive and negative norms. In a word, in order to fulfill the vital functionsand utilize the politeness principles of Chinese flatteries, we should synthetically utilize theexpressing concern, showing agreement, showing compassion, showing the acquaintance ofother’s needs and exaggerating other’s interest. Only in this way, can the flatteries fulfill itscommunicative function appropriately.
