On August30,1785, Lin Zexu (1785-1850) was born in a lower feudal intellectual family in Houguan of Fujian province, which is called Fuzhou now.In the April of1820, Lin Zexu was in charge of Hang Jiahu in Zhejiang. From then on, he began to try his best to help the people with great interest. Particularly, as a local official of the feudal era, not only had he got a profound understanding of great power of the people, but also he always paid attention to mobilizing the masses, to overcome the frequent natural disasters, and to fight against the extremely violent and wicked British invaders. No matter where he was an official, Lin Zexu did always benefit that place, and work for the local people, in spite of many dangers and difficulties. Therefore, whether it is on both sides of the Changjiang River, or on both sides of the Yellow River, and no matter where it is on the coast of the East Sea, or at the northwest frontier, there were his footprints left everywhere because of his diligent politics for the people. On April23,1820, with Chen Ruolin’s support, Lin Zexu was responsible for the repair of the seawall in Zhejiang and succeeded, and thus won the praise of the Emperor Daoguang. At the beginning of November,1824, Gaojiayan dam broke down, and Lake Hongze was damaged, then it also affected the grain transport, so Emperor Daoguang was very shocked. Lin Zexu recieved orders, he was dressed in white, hurried to the site, and soon solved the problem. In February,1832, Lin Zexu transferred to the governor of Jiangsu. In the last five years, Lin Zexu also did irrigation works greatly, he has presided over the initiate of Liuhe river, Baimao river, Pida river and other water conservancy projects. At the same time, in Lin Zexu’s advocacy and approval, people also initiated a lot of smaller water conservancy projects on both sides of the Changjiang River, and some of them were finished after the inspection and approval made by Lin Zexu. No doubt, these projects are very important to restore the rural economy. On August2,1841, the dam of the Yellow River broke down in the Northwest of Kaifeng. Flood ran everywhere. In front of the disaster, Emperor Daoguang had ordered Lin Zexu to return to Xiangfu site, helping Wang Ding fight against the flood for making up for his error. Although he was old and sick, Lin Zexu overcame all sorts of unimaginable difficulties, and completed this task successfullyOn December10,1842, Lin Zexu was demoted to the northwest frontier called Huiyuan, which was part of Yili.He decided to seize the time to do more contribution to the local people. Therefore, he asked to reclaim Aqi Wusu and got strong support from Bu Yantai. Later, in order to solve the water problem there, Lin Zexu himself led the workers to pick sand and dig rocks. After four months of hard work, they completed a grand canal with more than3000meters long and10meters wide in that barren land.At the same time of managing water, Lin Zexu also actively mobilized the society from all walks of life, to participate in relief work, and strived for the impact of natural disasters under the minimum level, and for rapid recovery of local production and living order. Lin Zexu also took the approach of "work for the dole", to help the victims overcome the burden. In addition, he also mobilized people to resume and develop agricultural production actively to save themselves.During this period, the Qing government didn’t have a clear attitude on banning smoking, so the Opium instantly swept across China.Prohibiting opium and opium eradication must be done immediately. In the face of flooding of opium, Lin Zexu resolutely took some forceful measures, He also wrote to Emperor Daoguang four times, and persuaded him with strong arguments. As a result, the anti-smoking movement spread all over China. On December31,1838, Emperor Daoguang appointed Lin Zexu as imperial envoy, and in charge of Guangdong Navy, then he went to Guangdong. On June3,1839, Lin Zexu led the army and the people of Guangzhou to burn more than237boxes of opium in the Humen Beach. Destroying Opium at Humen, to a climax of the movement, showed the world the confidence and determination of the Chinese people against foreign aggression. Through the fight against smoking practice, Lin Zexu deeply felt people’s great strength. He was sure that Guangdong’s people were a real force who could be used and relied on. As the fight against aggression went on, he even had an increasing recognition of "People were available " and "People could be depended on". He was sure that as long as we believed in the people and used the people, we could be able to drive out the British invaders. So, he not only advocated them to organize the militia, but also vigorously publicize government’s reward policy, calling on the people to fight the enemy bravely. These all showed Lin Zexu’s determination relying on the people against foreign invaders. The life of Lin Zexu had about40years in politics and crossed13provinces, so he was really a meritorious reformists of the landlord class representative. Whatever he was against the natural calamities, or against the foreign armed invasion, he always actively mobilized people, to strive for victory in the fight. At the same time, he also advocated learning from the west," Learn the others to beat the others". He was the first Chinese who saw the world first!...
