With the rapid development of China’s economy, the social demand for interpreters issurging. As interpretation programs have already been carried out in full swing in manyuniversities nationwide, the criteria for professional interpreters are more and moredemanding. The author has been a post graduate student in the School of ForeignLanguages of Soochow University since September,2010, majoring in Englishinterpretation. Two years’ study and practice enabled the author to have a furtherunderstanding about interpretation.Interpretation is a cross-cultural communication process. In this process, in order torealize an effective communication between peoples of two different nationalities, theinterpreter is required to have a good grasp of the two languages and at the same timeacquire a deep understanding about the thinking activities behind the two languages. Theauthor believes that thought pattern is closely related with language. Different historicalbackgrounds, geographic environments and cultural factors result in thethought-pattern-difference between Chinese and English. This kind of difference leads todifferent ways of expression. Therefore, thought pattern differences have a great impact on interpreting activities.Only a deep understanding of the thought-pattern-difference of the two languages canguarantee a smooth and barrier-free cross-cultural communication. Based on two C-Einterpretation exercises, the author is going to discuss and explain the effect ofChinese-English thought-pattern-difference on C-E interpreting and coping strategies. Itaims to remind interpreters to have a knowledge of those differences in order to reduce thenegative effects and deliver natural interpretation.
