The New Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a new test which was carried out on the basis of the old Chinese proficiency test. The new HSK consist of six levels, the level four is equivalent to the old HSK-vantage. The new HSK retains the original listening and reading parts, however, it removed the old grammar and cloze parts. At the same time, it adds a new topic--the writing part. The "Writing a sentence with the given picture and word" which this thesis focuses on is one of the two topics of the new writing part. This topic requires candidates using the given picture and word to write a complete and meaningful sentence. The given picture is closely related to the given word which refreshes the whole topic and makes the whole test more innovative and unique.Due to the new HSK comes out for not so long, so far, there have been some previous researches made on the old Chinese Proficiency Test respectively from listening and reading parts, but none of them has been done on the New HSK (Level four), especially on one of the topics of the whole test. This thesis is focused on lexical research of a sole topic called "Write a sentence with the given picture and word". This is the innovative point of this thesis. This thesis is mainly through collection, collation and studying the related documents of Linguistics, Lexicology, Testing, Pedagogics and Second Language Acquisition and takes them as the theoretical basis. After analyzing all the lexis of the whole eight volumes of new HSK model tests, author applied the effective methods to practical teaching as well as gave some operable suggestions respectively to the people who are working on editing the test, who are teaching new HSK and who are willing to pass the test. Author hopes that this work can help promote the Chinese teaching for a long-term development and flourish.This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is Introduction which manifests the purpose and goal of the present research and its significance, summarizes the previous researches on the New HSK and introduces the way how the data is collected. Chapter two, the main part of the thesis, carefully analyzes all the lexis of the "Write a sentence with the given picture and word" which appeared in the eight volumes of new HSK model tests. The analysis consists of three parts, which are the Part of Speech, the Theme and the Difficulty Level. Chapter three offers some effective and practical suggestions to related groups of people. They are people who are working on editing the test, who are teaching new HSK and who are willing to pass the test. Chapter four summarizes the whole thesis and draws a conclusion. The thesis is concluded by pointing out the "Write a sentence with the given picture and word" has its own regular patterns and evidently can be widely used in practical teaching and hoping that the present thesis may be of some help to the researchers of New HSK (Level four).
