Abstract/Summary:
Movie and TV series Title is one object of the Applied Linguistics study. It has the general nature of the language, but also distinguishes from other Title Language. We selected2800screened Chinese film and TV series’titles in the last decade as the objects of this study, and we analyze in detail from the following three perspectives.Firstly, we investigate the construction of the title. As for the structural elements, we find the title can be divided into simple Chinese title and the title with other elements, including digital, Pinyin or English letters, words and punctuation. As to say the construction style, it has both the original style, such as directly named the title with characters, things, time, premises, and the non-original style, using existing language fragments as title, such as poetry, lyrics and allusion. As for construction principles, these titles often follow such three principles, concise but meaningful, highlighting the theme and attracting the audience.Secondly, we have a linguistic point of view of ontology analysis on the title. Observing the syllable of these titles, it can be found that four-syllable titles occupy the largest number of the whole, with the relevant of their own characteristics and the symmetrical psychological of the Chinese. Regarding to syntactic function category of the titles, noun phrase in Movie and TV series titles are far more than the predicative, which is due to the noun phrase are more suitable for the title. Further observation on the noun phrase titles, we found that the partial formal noun phrases have an absolute advantage, due to high frequency use and the strong position of the partial formal noun phrases in natural language, their own characteristics and suitability for title. From Semantic and pragmatic point of view, these titles have three features. First, syntactic structure in titles does not focus on the signs of the form, mainly relying on the semantic association between the compositions, therefore semantic becomes more important. Second, part of the titles implied some valence components, resulting in a semantic uncertainty and richness. Third, in pursuit of novel and unique language, some titles breakthrough in word semantics with rules and logical affair Category, constituting extraordinary collocation with significant pragmatic value.Thirdly, we compare English titles of the Oscar and Golden Globe nominations with the Chinese title in the last decade. From the syntactic point of view, on the one hand, both the English and the Chinese title tend to a large number of noun phrase title, on the other hand, the predicative phrase in the Chinese title is slightly higher than title in English. From the perspective of Hypotaxis and Parataxis, Chinese titles focus more on semantic, often without the aid of a linguistic form means but using logical link of the word or sentence to complete the connection. While in English title, the construction of phrase or sentence often resort to various forms of means. In terms of the quality and quantity principles, we compare the original English titles with translated Chinese titles, finding that the translated Chinese titles pay more attention to "quantity", while the original English titles are the opposite.
