| As a pioneer of the Modern Poetry Movement who worships China, Ezra Poundhas translated a lot of Chinese poems and classical literature. Like a cannibalizer,Pound absorbs the marrow of Chinese culture and gradually forms an extraordinarystyle of translation and writing. This thesis aims to prove that Pound’s Confuciantranslation has supplied nutrition and energy to his thought on poetics and politicsthrough a cannibal reading of Confucian Classics translation.Ezra Pound’s translation of Confucian Classics is the confirmation and guidanceof his poetics and his devouring of the characteristics of Chinese language andConfucianism in turn promotes the theory and practice of imagism and energizes hispolitical statement. Poundian translation adopts an ideogrammic translation methodto interpret the images and ideograms of words instead of giving equivalentdefinitions, directly quoting Chinese characters and occasionally imitating Chinesegrammar, which empowers the translated text and challenges dominant literature.Learning from Confucianism, Pound uses history as a guide and a mirror to succeedforebears’ fine tradition. He also enriches Confucius’ order view and activelyrecommends the policy of benevolence in Confucianism. As a result, such absorptionof Confucianism strengthens his humanity and points Pound a way of saving westerncivilization.In order to demonstrate the cannibal behavior in his translation, the author hasimplemented some cases study to explore on the purpose and the significance ofPound’s cannibalism. Not only cannibalizing the essence of a foreign culture, Poundalso reciprocally improves the value and position of Confucianism in western society,which affords a lesson on the attitude for foreign cultures and the transmission andacceptance of one’s culture in a foreign country. |
