Hongtong Guangsheng Temple&Water God’s Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, the main body of the existing building Mingying Wang Palace was reconstruct in Yuan Dynasty Yanyou six years(1319AD), and it has been saved up to now. The Yuan mural in the palace was been painted in Yuan Emperor Taiding the first year(1324AD), lasted for20years. The whole mural has rich content and prominent theme,and it is full of deep breath of life.And it is a masterpiece of our country’s costoms, myths and folk religions. It also provides valuable image information and reference to research in religion, culture, social life, art, literature, etc. The mural possesses high art value and historical value.In our country, the large-scale development of ancient mural paintings is after the Taoism and Buddhism has sprung up, so religion is the main content of the mural painting. Temple mural plays a significant role in our nation’s mural art development. The Water God’s Temple, as one of the custom temple, originates from Chinese folk,traditional belief in the god of water. According to the local typical nature and society condition,the temple came into being,and it has a broad mass participation.There are totally14pieces of painting in the Hongtong Guangsheng Temple&Water God’s Temple. The theme of them is the belief in the god of water. The main part is "Qi Yu Tu"(picture of Pray for the rain),"Jiang Yu Tu"(picture of Raining),the moral of whole mural is "Qi"(Pray) and "Qiu"(Beg), followed by "Xia Qi Tu"(picture of Chessing),"Mai Yu Tu"(picture of Selling Fish),"Shui Wan Tu"(picture of Hitting balls) and "Za Ju Tu"(picture of Drama), which show the people’s life of Yuan Dynasty. While the contemporaneous temple are focus on displaying the Buddhism and Taoism stories, the mural in the Water God’s Temple was making breakthrough on the theme. It not only makes the god of water become an reasonable image of Chinese traditional emperor, but also shows many different aspects of the people’s colorful daily life sush as, chessing,selling fish,playing ball,thankgiving the god.These rich content through all kinds of morals, then as a artistic form of mural, highly unified on the main line "Praying for the rain". The entire painting primary and secondary distinct, and the lines of characters are vigorous. It uses a novel method and makes the character vivid, and livingly reappear the social life, occasion at that time. And it transcend the traditional temple mural’s barriers,and make an abstract art interpretation of the life,presented the highly unity in the relationship of art and daily life.The Yuan Dynasty is quite a special one in Chinese history. It is governed by the minority Mongolian nationality, and it administers the policies which protect their own national interests and culture,but confronted with the advanced culture of Han nation since the Tang and Song Dynasty, it eventually formed an aspect that Han and Mongolian culture merged together.So the multinational feature is appeared in the mural of Water God’s Temple. And at that time,in the local social environment,the booming of the economy, the worship of the god of water, the popularity of Yuan Drama and the development of sports all have been reflected by the mural. The specail theme and art style make the reseach of the Water God’s Temple have higher artistic and historical value and realistic meaning.Therefore, so to speak, the mural of Hongtong Guangsheng Temple&Water God’s Temple is a picture of social life in Yuan Dynasty, and it also reflects that the art is from life and higher than life. Art is multi-angled reproduction of the life.
