Language is a tool for communication. Among four basic skills of listening, speaking, readingand writing, listening is the most important and the primary way for people to learn a new language. It hasbeen over30years since the preliminary setting of the listening class in teaching Chinese as a foreignlanguage in the early1980s. TCSL educators make research of listening teaching from varied angles, butthe teaching effect is still unsatisfactory and so is the listening comprehension of the students. Moreover,the current situation of listening teaching is a major concern. With the rapid development of the society andtechnology, the ways of learning language have become diversified. In the environment of usingmultimedia teaching, movies are not only teaching medium but also materials and content of courses. It isshowed by the study of experimental psychology that the audio-visual multichannel input is an efficientway of learning language. Since audio-visual instruction become more and more popular, the listeninglesson type has changed in some colleges and universities in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Theaudio-visual instruction’s appearance break the traditional mode and movies are just good material for it.All these suggest that the movie can provide a breaking point and new direction for listening teaching.Based on the comparison with traditional listening teaching, this paper shows feasibility andadvantage that the Chinese movie can provide for listening teaching through the researching of currentTCSL situations. Combining theory and practice, I find that it depends on the clips intercepted from themovie for the most part whether the Chinese movie can be well used in listening teaching or not. So Isummarize the factors and principle of choosing movie clips and how to make clips for teaching, in order toprovide a scientific plan for listening courses. In the end, I make a detailed design for preparation beforeclass and the audio-visual presentation in the class to show that how the use of Chinese movie clipsoptimize the teaching effect, in order to make full use of the Chinese movie, reform the listening teachingmode and teach through lively activities.In order to show my concept design more intuitively, this paper provides a two-class hour-longcase which aims at Chinese professional foreign students over intermediate level. I choose three suitableclips from the Chinese movie “Hua Mulan” and make a detailed introduction of how to optimize thelistening teaching and improve the listening comprehension and the language proficiency of the students.
