The Nine Friends on Painting is a poem composed by Wu Weiye, it imitates the style ofDu Fu’s poem The Eight Celestial Drinkers,and describes nine famous painters in Chingdynasty .For its wide spreaded,there were some poems also made in the manner of Wu’s.Because the nine painters were celebrated in modern times,chinese artists,such as WuHufan,tried to collect and printed their picture albums.It is quite an interesting culturalphenomenon,for this poem cast a certain impact both on the painting circles and the literarycircles. Study on this subject not only can help us clear the interrelationship of these poetrybut also conclude the causes and influence of this cultural phenomenon.The thesis contains three parts,the introduction, main text and conclusion.The preface elaborates the objects, purpose and significance of the study, clarifies therelevant research history and status quo.The body portion includes three chapters:Chapter I discusses the time Wu Weiye composed this poem, analyses the backgroundand poet’s mentality refer to Wu Weiye ’s life and related literature materials.According to TheCollection of Wu Weiye’s Writings,it was July 1656 that Wu Weiye composedThe Nine Friendson Painting .At that time he was in Beijing,appointed as JiJiu of Imperial Academy by theemperor of the Ching Dynasty .He wrote this poem to empress his shame for he could not beloyal to the Ming Dynasty,his sorrow for he had no choice,and he desired to be a hermit justas the nine famous painters mentioned in his poem.Chapter II discusses the relationship of Wu Weiye and the nine painters mentioned in thispoem.The outcome show that the nine painters were not friends,and even Wu Weiye may notfamiliar with all of them aswell.The reason that he mentioned them is he wanted to reveal hehas the same aspiration as them,and wish himself could be as unrestricted as they were. Theresults not only confirm the ratiocination of Chapter I,but also verify the view that the ninepersons are friends or a group.Chapter III divides into two sections.One section discusses the special style, used by WuWeiye and other poets,such as Zhao Yanxiu, Ye Gongchuo,learn fromDu Fu’s poem The Eight Celestial Drinkers .The other section appraises the influence of The Nine Friends on Paintingin the painting circles .Conclusion ,we should pay more attention about the meaning of certain word,for it maybecame change during its spread. According to this study, literary researchers also need to getmore knowledge about art,because our ancient works may concern topainting,music,calligraphy and so on.
