This thesis basically adoptsthe principles of modern Imagologie in the analysis of images offoreign countries in the novels of Zhang Ling. The present paper is comprised of five chapters. Chapter two isaimed at analyzing the four types of image of foreign people. In thethird chapter from there aspects of the“images of self-shaping”whotraveled far away across the ocean to go aboard. Chapter four offersan interpretation of the forming reasons of foreign people’s images inher novels. The last chapter conclusion, as an overseas Chinese,Zhang Ling tends to see the world in a cross-national andcross-cultural perspective.Through the analysis of the novels written by Zhang Ling, the present study yields the following results. Images of foreign people inher novels consist of the images of people who traveled far awayacross the ocean to go aboard and the“images of self-shaping”.Influenced by various reasons such as the background of newimmigrants, rich experiences by living at home and abroad as well asa placid attitude in composition, Zhang Ling has created lots ofunique exotic images. So far as the present writer reaches, the previous studies of worksof Zhang Ling are mainly in the perspectives of narratology, immigration theory, feminism, etc., while the studies in the angle ofImagologie are relatively limited and shallow. The present studyadopts principles of Imagologie in Comparative Literature as theprimary theoretical support. The keystone lies in the“self-shapingimages”created by Zhang Ling, the announcement of the profoundcultural factors that generate the images being described and theattitude and the expectation of Zhang Ling for the Chinese-Westerncommunication.
