Shuowenjiezi is China’s first encyclopedic dictionary, written in the Eastern HanDynasty by Xu Shen.It has9353entries. This dictionary explains the meaning,structure, pronunciation of ancient Chinese characters. Study of these ancient Chinesecharacters can understand the ancient social traffic development situation, especiallythe ancient transportation.This thesis of Shuowenjiezi is about the traffic characters,from Xu Shen to the characters solution, initial attempts to explore the use of transportconditions.In this thesis,Xu Xuan’s Version of Shuowenjiezi is focused on, at the sametime paying attention of other book, dictionary, and other material.The road andstation, foot traffic, horses, cars and water transport five aspects carries on thepreliminary discussion.
