Oil paintings with local theme can trace back to the Renaissance, new era artistswere no longer satisfied to carry forward the previous creation model of inheritance, andthey began to be interested in real life around. They have tried to observe what havehappened around them with a new vision and they began to describe real humanity.The paper will study Western painting through two representative local artistsMiller and Pieter Bruegel. In art history’s, Pieter Brueghel in Netherlands was the first"peasant painter" in the mid-16th century in Europe, so people called him “peasantPieter Bruegel". He was famous as the first person to paint the peasant successfully. Heaffected the Western rural painting in an enlightenment way. And Miller was a masterof realistic painting in19th century in French. He devoted all his life to describe thefarmer’s life, so he also has the name of "peasant painter". His paintings were the modelof the Western rural painting and affected the developing way of Western rural paintingas a landmark.This paper analyzes the paintings of Pieter Bruegel and Miller as a starting point,considering with background, career, and theme, then elicits the main line of theWestern rural painting. Furthermore, it also analyzes other rural painters’ paintings andcompares each other, then summarizes the characteristics of the Western rural painting.Finally, the paper will elaborate writer’s view about the rural painting, and thendiscourse the influences in the rural painting of China.After researching, it would be concluded that the Western Rural Painting havesome specific characteristics such as national, real, simple and so on, and they have their own special depend on historical, geographical factors and others. But the essence ofthem is same. That is, people will find the spirit from the Western rural painting. Whilethey are exploring and asking the essence of art, they recognize that lives and art arecontacting together in inherent and essential way. Meanwhile, they put theircomprehensions and feelings into the creation of the rural painting. They describe therural area, and pursue the humanity as well. That is the real meaning of Rural Painting.
